The Role of Independent and Alternative Media in Conducting Investigative Journalism

This article examines the role of independent and alternative media in conducting journalistic investigations, focusing on the coverage of the protests that occurred in Kazakhstan in January 2022. The study presents a comparative analysis of materials published on three online platforms: «Azattyq», «Vlast» and «Inbusiness». The research employs content analysis and case study methods to identify the specific features of coverage, as well as to determine the methods and approaches used by each of these sources. The analysis focuses on articles published on 5 and 6 January 2022, which address the protests and the authorities’ response to them. The findings reveal that the «Azattyq» and «Vlast» websites actively engage in journalistic investigations, incorporating the viewpoints of protest participants, experts, and detailed accounts of the unfolding events. In contrast, the «Inbusiness» website predominantly focuses on the official government response, reporting on the measures taken to suppress the protests and restore order, while the materials lack in-depth analysis of the events and opinions from opposition experts. In conclusion, recommendations are provided for improving journalistic investigation practices, expanding the representation of independent viewpoints in materials, and enhancing the level of objectivity in the coverage of significant events.

The Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN for implementation by 2030 have become a point of reference and a call to action, not only for global communities, but also for domestic universities that can contribute to the formation of long-term sustainable trends in the growth of the level and quality of education in Kazakhstan. It is evident that the capacity of universities to offer innovative, technologically advanced, inclusive resources, educational tools and a reputable academic community has a significant impact on the promotion of freedom of opinion, access to information and media legislation. In the contemporary phase of communication discourse, the role of journalism in promoting sustainable societal development has become a matter of pressing concern. Concurrently, training programs have been compelled to ascend to new heights of complexity and rigor to meet these emerging demands. In addition to presenting objective, comprehensive information, journalism associated with the SDGs can contribute to inequality reduction, poverty eradication, climate change, environmental protection, etc. Undoubtedly, new formats require journalists to be highly competent, literate, skilled in solving ethical dilemmas, understand new methods and techniques of information exchange, fact-checking, be able to organize public discussions on topical issues and create quality content. The article discusses the issues of journalism education within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals, examines the experience of work in inter-row projects, formulates the main concepts and offers the author's conclusions.

Improving and developing the culture of using the Kazakh language is a task not only for linguists, but also for people who use their native language, including teachers in the field of education, as well as representatives of the media. Because the mass media have a great influence on the use of language in society. At the same time, special attention should be paid to the culture and vocabulary of language use in social networks, which have a special impact on the consciousness of society. The culture of language consists of many scientific and practical issues, but there are no negative consequences. It is also necessary not only to identify errors, but also to observe the language norms established in accordance with the language system. Today we see a lot of rude comments and offensive expressions in the media. The symbol of culture is that people talk to each other with love and good intentions in communication, considering language as an aesthetic tool.Today, the number of social media users is increasing. In the developed world of technology, the use of borrowed words and terms is also growing. This article provides a comprehensive analysis on the use of vocabulary in social media. At the same time, using specific examples from the Instagram network, which is widely used by the middle generation and young people, simple vocabulary is analyzed: rude elements, jargon, euphemisms, dialects and barbarisms.

This article explores media coverage perspectives on human trafficking in the Republic of Kazakhstan and Ethiopia. Human trafficking remains a pressing global issue and problem with both countries affected by it. Scholars in Media and Communication emphasize that media has the potential to raise awareness and educate people about social issues such as human trafficking and others. It indicates the efforts made by both nations to combat the issue noting that they have made progress in their interventions. Moreover, it shows that media in both countries covers the issue though the coverage doesn’t fully reflect the extent and gravity of the problem. The challenges that journalists face while reporting on human trafficking are financial constraints, lack of protection and safety, limited awareness, editorial pressure and political bureaucracy. The paper recommends that extensive and consistent media coverage is significant in combating human trafficking, not only in these two nations but throughout the world.

Strategies for the multimedia development of modern Russian media

All the most popular Russian media sites are converged. This was shown by studies conducted in 2022-2024. However, the proportion of multimedia publications varies enormously, from single multimedia publications to the dominance of multimedia publications in the total volume of content. In this regard, we can talk about three strategies for the multimedia development of modern Russian media – exclusive, selective and total. With an exceptional strategy, multimedia elements are represented in a small part of the publications, but they complement these publications significantly. With selective multimedia, up to a third of publications are multimedia, and the most popular multimedia format is the addition of a news story with a reportage video. With total multimedia, multimedia publications on the site dominate, but a significant part of the multimedia is not related to the event covered in the text part, and is usually a background on the topic or a video news collection. The research results show that the Russian media has not yet developed a generally accepted multimedia strategy, and that the level of multimedia content is not a key factor influencing the popularity of the media.

At present, in connection with the renewal of public consciousness and views, new judgments have been made from the point of view of studying literary heritage, and historical weighing has been undertaken. Thanks to independence, when looking at our past, analyzing previously published journalistic works, the reality that was sealed as a result of the Prohibition of the Soviet ideology, which was born by the Marxist-Leninist methodology, turned to one-on-one publicity. The article analyzes the special influence of Abai's heritage on his students, as a result of which the formation of their creativity, their leaders, and their value for society are considered. Hakim analyzes the journalistic world of his students, epistolary texts that firmly convey the socio-social, historical, political, spiritual face of that era, determines their ideological orientation, artistic features and contribution to the national tradition of journalism.Folk problems in the works of Abai's students are analyzed from the point of view of independence, analysis and conclusions are given. The most acute issues of journalistic heritage (education, enlightenment, settlement, religion, language, etc.) are removed and revised from an independent point of view. Analyzing the works of the leading poets around Hakim, it is proposed to systematize educational and educational journalism; religious and educational journalism; journalism about the Earth, artistic journalism; philosophical journalism; journalism that determined the appearance of the times, etc.

This scientific article is devoted to the epistolary heritage of Azilkhan Nurshaikov. The reflection of humans sence through letters occupies a special place in the author's work and literary heritage. The main purpose of the research is to study Azilkhan Nurshaikov's letters and determine his role and significance inrevealing humans sence and personal qualities. An important direction of scientific research is a comprehensive study of epistolary journalism in the context of the development of Kazakh literature, tracing its close relationship with national literature. In addition, the analys is of the author's personal life and views in letters reveals the deep meaning and ideas of his works. The practical significance of the study lies in assessing the artistic value of A. Nurshaikov’s letters from the point of view of the development of modern journalism and in ensuring that research in this area becomes the basis for future scientific work. Based on the research, the content and stylistic features of A. Nurshaikov's letters are analyzed. Philosophical thoughts and issues of inter personal relations in letters are considered, and a special view of the author's work is formed. In addition, the article discusses the possibility of understanding the inner world of a person through letters, revealing his complex psychology. This study reveals the depth and versatility of A. Nurshaikov’s spiritual heritage and contributes to strength ening his place in Kazakh journalism. Convergence can be considered as a center that simultaneously publishes news for the world as a whole across all types of media, such as periodicals, radio, television, and the Internet. They are exchanged among themselves in the form of an advertising model and have been rapidly spreading in the information world in recent years. In this scientific article, in order to give an impetus to the development of multimedia activities, we put the converging activity of a journalist in the process of videography. A convergent journalist can professionally produce high-quality video, taking into account the specifics of the on-screen language, the content of the information, the purpose of its display on the screen, the nature of the shooting, the technical capabilities of the camera and the features of creating an on-screen video with editing in mind. However, a convergent journalist needs to understand that the basic nature of a video also depends on its distribution channels, that is, a video broadcast on television is different from a video posted on the Internet. At the same time, the technology of television and the Internet is determined by the various functionality and design features inherent in the DVR.

Media legacy of Shokan Ualikhanov during the period of development of Kazakh journalism

This article examines the journalistic legacy of ShoqanUalikhanov through the lens of contemporary academic analysis. The study explores his contributions to the formation of national journalism during its developmental phase, his role in advancing Kazakh democratic public discourse, and the significance and forms of his media heritage, which exhibit characteristics of travel journalism. Additionally, public perceptions of his journalistic image are analyzed based on data from a social study. The findings of the scientific analysis demonstrate that even in his time, Shoqan Walikhanov adhered to principles characteristic of modern journalism, such as information analysis, fact-based research, and objective reporting. By applying the historical-comparative method, textual analysis, and source evaluation, his travel notes and ethnographic works are examined, revealing the presence of travel journalism elements. Furthermore, his journalistic contributions played a pivotal role in fostering Kazakh intellectual and democratic thought, introducing diverse journalistic formats, and incorporating visual storytelling through illustrations. Thus, Ualikhanov’s works can be regarded as one of the earliest domestic examples of travel journalism, underscoring their significance in the history of the national press. This, in turn, strengthens the academic foundation for studying the evolution of professional Kazakh journalism.

The media literacy discussed in this article focuses on digital content based on the Internet, as well as content based on print media, that is, analog media provided by newspapers, which are considered very useful in teaching media literacy. Media literacy is access to materials obtained from various media and the ability to identify, understand, interpret, evaluate, transmit, calculate and create this material. Literacy is an ongoing process. This means that people achieve their goals, develop their own knowledge and potential, as well as contribute to the social environment, society. The purpose of media literacy education also includes the formation of a critical attitude towards content bias in accordance with the characteristics of the media. Thus, our media literacy ,education is based on content dedicated to the social issues that surround us, such as news, articles, documentaries and editorials. The goals and objectives of media literacy education with the advent of the Internet, it has become difficult to limit the volume and variety of information, since the production and dissemination of information has now become the property of the public, and not the property of a certain class.
