The presented article has a theoretical and methodological character. It is devoted to the research
of the main approaches to understanding and analyzing the role and characteristics of texts that connect the life
world and the personal world of an individual. The article shows that traditional approaches to the research
of text (discursive and spatial) cannot provide a complete explanation of the information and communication
processes occurring during the transition to digital civilization. The theory of the information and communication
universe is considered as a promising approach. This concept denotes a complex self-developing system that
predetermines all information and communication processes. In this regard, the article proposes to abandon the
traditional ideas about the functions of communication, because only systems created by people have functions.
However, the information and communication universe, like culture in general, is not such a system. The author
of the article suggests moving on to the concept of affordances. Affordances are the opportunities that the
information and communication universe has and that people can take advantage of.
